This usually occurs with Conexant SmartAudio HD, Realtek, VIA HD Audio sound chips, and Sony and Asus laptops. However, at the same time, usually (but not always) in this case the sound card in Device Manager is called "Device with high definition audio support" (and this is a sure sign that there is no drivers installed for it). Note that there may be more than one SST device in the system device list, follow the steps for all of them.

If there are other supported drivers listed, such as "High Definition Audio Device", select it, click "Next" and install it.
